WordPress.Com vs WordPress.Org

Both are handled by Automattic, both are using the famous WordPress publishing script, but both are different in a couple of definite ways. WordPress is a very powerful tool, that even not so techies people can coupe with and make use of, even teenagers from ages 10-13 are starting WordPress blogs on their own. But, what actually is the difference among the two?

If you go with WordPress.Com, you can be sure of almost a hundred percent of uptime and quick server response, keeping your website online all the time. You also don’t need to worry about server maintainenance nor worry about upgrading your WordPress blog every now and then when a new version has been released.

Whilst if you go with a own hosted blog and just grab the software on WordPress.Org, your options are infinite. You can mess around with the script in any way you want, install any plugin that you wish to run, edit themes, add themes and more. Including one vital thing, advertises to your blog.

In short, WordPress.Com is the opposite of WordPress.Org, and the other way around. You don’t have the privilege to add your own advertsement to your WordPress blog on WordPress.Com, but you are privileged to unmatched server uptime and site response that only a few (especially shared hosts) can match. But the sad part is that you have pay 15 Dollar for just editing the CSS of your themes, still hindering you from adding new themes that you like, as you have to coupe with the pre-uploaded themes that are available for everyone.

But, running a own hosted blog has its negative effects too, you are not that secure when you’re on your own, and it also requires some more techie stuff for you to get started with your blog, but that shouldn’t be a big problem. The major concern really is the security of your WordPress site. Especially on Shared Hosts. But don’t think that own hosted blogs are bad, they are very excellent if you are seeking to earn money from them with AdSense and other money making programs, you can customize it to whatever suits you best, and there are even good plugins that help you make your blog SEO ready and get you started for many many visitors from search engines to come.

And that is the vital thing that is missing in WordPress.Com, you cannot alter the Meta Title, Description and the tags, which is a big step backward from me, being a webmaster who really likes to get hits from search engines. Whilst you cannot get hits from the search machines, one good way of getting targeted traffic on WordPress.Com is to interact in the community, the tag surfer which shows real time posts of your favorite topics is one of the big assets that has attracted me to WordPress.Com, even if that particular feature is still in beta.q

Its hard to make a choice when you’re just starting off. But personally I recommend to get your own blog, and host it by yourself, as you are the master of your blog then and can add anything that you want.

What would you choose?
